#30DaysWild Day 5. Bertie the Bat.
The wild came to me today, in the form of a bat rescue call from a lady who had found this little Pipistrelle lying on her living room floor. She put him outside for the night in the hope that he’d fly off, but he was still there today so she called Surrey Bat Rescue. He’s very underweight – a terrifying 2.88g on arrival, which is by far the lightest bat I’ve had – and was desperately thirsty and weak. I put him on the towel to feed him and he just lay there like a little flat furry pancake! I’m taking things very slowly with him, as I don’t want to overload his system when he’s so underweight, but he was a lot more perky once I got him hydrated, and he’s increasingly enthusiastic about the mealworms: I’ve been squeezing out the insides for him, but the last few times he’s been grabbing the whole thing.
He has an infection on his wrist/finger joint, so I’m treating that and he’s on antibiotics. Time will tell with this one, but he seems like a fighter, so fingers crossed for him!
