Surrey365; Day 50. The son of my favourite bee.

Following on from my previous post… here is the result of Betty the bee’s maternal dedication. Finally, her sons are emerging. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

The mason bee mother can choose the sex of the egg she lays, laying a fertilised egg to produce a female, and an unfertilised egg to produce a male. She lays female eggs in the rear chambers, and male eggs in the front chambers, so the males emerge first and spend a few days having a bit of a jolly; exploring the local area, feeding themselves up and jostling with each other for prime postition in preparation for the females emerging.

He’s a good looking little fella, isn’t he? πŸ˜€
