Surrey365; Day 4. A few of a Smew.

Not just one picture today, but a few of a beautiful Smew. This little diving duck from the sawbill family only visits the UK in small numbers during the winter. This one is a captive (wings clipped) bird at the popular duck ponds of our local PYO and farm shop, Secretts in Milford. If you’d like to know more about wild Smews, this article is great.

You can see from the picture of his serrated beak why they’re part of the sawbill family; I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of those fishing teeth. Their colouring is just beautiful… like someone got carried away with a black felt tip pen.
