Surrey365; Day 3. Lichen.

One of the highlights of walking at Thursley at this time of year is the lichens fruiting. These tiny little Cladonia floerkeana (I might be totally wrong with that tentative ID, as discussed in a previous post here), also known as Devil’s Matchsticks and British Soldiers (for their red hats), are such a treat when you get down to ground level for a closer look. It’s an Alice in Wonderland experience, where things take on an entirely different perspective; the lichens are forests and the mosses are shrubs.
