Rainbow over Troutbeck Tongue

The day we left Cumbria after our little holiday, I decided to drive up over Kirkstone Pass, as it’s one of my favourite routes. Heading north from Windermere we were clearly heading towards a change in the weather; the conditions on the other side of the pass were dark and menacing with lots of low cloud. As we passed Troutbeck Tongue – this strangely shaped little fell – it was illuminated in a shaft of rich sunlight against the low cloud behind, complete with a little rainbow. The gloomy picture is looking north down the valley from Kirkstone Pass into the much gloomier weather on the other side.

    • Thanks Amelia. This actually happened twice on this holiday (second instance to follow shortly) but it’s a rare moment and they were quite weak rainbows. It’s only happened to me a couple of times before and it’s very special when it does.
