It isn’t, in fact, a caterpillar. It’s the larva of the birch sawfly (Cimbex femoratus). Rather cute though.
Those sawfly nymphs will fool you. Good eyesight, Lucy. This one disappears in the foliage.

Great photographs. He has got a very innocent baby face but the name doesn’t sound to good, not for birches anyway.
