San Lorenzo Maggiore

The Neopolitans were doing pretty much the same thing thousands of years ago – this is a Greco-Roman marketplace, excavated beneath the San Lorenzo Maggiore church and monastery at the centre of historic Naples. The excavations have revealed layers of history – as you descend through the levels, you are going back in time. I didn’t take many photos, as this was the first place we visited and I had yet to realise that nobody takes the slightest notice of the signs forbidding photography! We had this amazing place entirely to ourselves.
