Sweet chestnut

The chestnuts have suffered in our poor summer this year; all the ones we’ve found have been either brown but small and underdeveloped, or large and plump but not ripe. 😦 They’re fiddly to prepare but oh-so-worth-it for the taste of brussel sprouts with chestnuts, or turkey and leek pie with chestnuts rolled into the pastry crust. This year we’ll have to buy our chestnuts, sadly.

Still, this one spotted by my daughter had particularly beautiful markings around the base.
