What on earth could it be??!

I wasn’t going to publish this for at least another four weeks (and a day), but I’ve got the devil in me, for some reason, and I’m just going to chuck it out there.

What on earth could it be?

Noooooo! Don’t go down there – you never know who you might run into!

What a very mysterious entrance! What on earth could be at the bottom of that staircase?

  1. If that is a grand house in the background, I’d hazard a guess that it is an ice-house or whatever you would like to call a place where they used to store ice in the winter to use during the summer time and it is standing in what used to be the grand house’s land. It may not be the correct answer but I think I should be given a pat on the head for being inventive.

    • That’s a bit unfair to expect ‘afrenchgarden’ to know that it’s a part of the James Bond set for ‘Skyfall’, and is very probably 007’s escape route from his ancestral family home while it’s under heavy attack from the bad guys led by Silva (Javier Bardem). Only a few weeks to go and all will be revealed!

  2. Hmm…, I think at the bottom or that staircase is a wall! With beautiful plasterwork of an experienced employee of Pinewood.
    Lucy … I am speechless πŸ™‚

I dreamed last night that the picture was on the front page of the NY Times, and there were satellite trucks for my home from the BBC and CNN … and some scary men in black coats and hats …
I didn’t understand, because I am very good at keeping secrets. But now I get it … πŸ˜‰

    • πŸ™‚ Charles I think you’re right! πŸ™‚

If the photo ends up on the front page of the NY Times, I will be blaming you and your inability to keep secrets!! πŸ˜‰ I don’t think the men in black coats will be coming for you just yet though… πŸ™‚

  3. Dear Lucy, your images are brilliant and you managed something I wasn’t allowed to do…cause I signed a contract which says I am not supposed to take any photographs during the shoot. But that wasn’t in England but in Scotland, where Skyfall is supposed to be. I studied Filmtourism and this could be something really exciting. I want to explain how everything comes together and want to do a little exhibition. It would be so nice if you could contact me on my e-mail adress. PS. Love your Nature photos. Have to admit that I am obsessed with funghi and have a stills collection of yellow boletuses πŸ™‚

  5. Spoiler: it appears the Bond family in the movie were recusant Catholics and that staircase is an exit way for a priest hole during the Reformation. It would be consistent with Felming’s model for Bond. The Bond family in Dorset were recusant Catholics whose family motto was Orbis non Sufficit or The world is not enough.

  6. Good Afternoon.

I have come across your site whilst researching Skyfall filming locations that I want to visit. Congratulation on the shots you managed to grab whilst the crew was on location.

Where about’s is the location where the lodge was located please? I’m not 100% sure I have the right place on Google maps.

Was it South East of the Golf Course on Hankley Common?

If you could point me to where the main dry stone wall entrance was I’d really appreciate it.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    Ian.

    • Hi Ian,

I’ve just looked these up using Surrey Interactive Map and Google Maps – they’re as accurate as I can get them, but I’m not infallible!

The grid references for where the entrance was are as follows… 6 figure ref: SU883410; 12 figure ref: 488349,141097
For the site of the Lodge… 6 figure ref: SU883405; 12 figure ref: 488396,14055
For the site of the chapel … 6 figure ref: SU886401 12 figure ref: 488608,140111

Hope that helps. I’m afraid you’ll find a distinct lack of mountains and a loch though – those were added in post-processing! πŸ˜€
