Another beautiful morning, so I thought I’d try Winkworth Arboretum for some autumn colour. The highlight was a large Acer (maple family) – Acer rubrum with a stunning variety of colours in the fallen and falling leaves.
There was some nice colour elsewhere too, and I came across a beautiful birch with pink bark.
I got a bumper haul of chestnuts, so will be tackling the fiddly business of parboiling and peeling them later on, then freezing them for the winter. Fantastic in a puff pastry pie crust, sandwiched between the layers, or with brussel sprouts; parboil the sprouts then roast them in the oven with olive oil/meat juices, bacon and chestnuts. Oh my.
